An Investigation of Protease activity and Natural Moisturising Factors as Biomarkers for Atopic Dermatitis
John Chittock, Simon G. Danby and Michael J. Cork
Breakdown of the skin barrier is key to the development of Atopic Dermatitis (AD). By identifying specific mechanisms of breakdown and repairing through the appropriate treatment the natural course of AD can be intervened. We would like to investigate mechanisms of protease hyperactivity and low NMF in non-lesional AD skin, relate this to clinical phenotypes of established disease, and discover if these biomarkers signal disease onset in neonates during the pivotal 1st year of skin development.
